A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding Car Servicing

A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding Car Servicing

Majority of motorists unaware of what is involved in their annual car service.

A survey undertaken by a past Motoriety study and explained in GarageWire shows that 92% of motorists are completely unaware of the service requirements of their own cars, and therefore can be taken advantage of when it comes to their annual vehicle service.

Whilst most garages are not out to make a cheap buck from their customers, the survey highlights the importance of making sure car owners are well educated, so that they feel confident in asking the right questions and feel satisfied with their service.

Typical potholes motorists can fall into

Whilst many motorists do have a keen understanding of their vehicle and the typical checks undertaken in an annual service there are still many potholes that even the most savvy car owner can fall into:

1. Expecting a quick fix: We know time is precious, but for garages to do a good job on your vehicle you need to make sure they collate the right information. How many miles your car has done, vehicle history and what kind of driving you do all help to allow the garage to make the right decisions on your behalf.

2. Not understanding Service Requirements: Your Original Manufacturer’s service requirements must be met to ensure your vehicle is safe on the road. Always check your vehicles service requirements such as how many miles you should be driving between services.  Be wary of second hand dealers warranty packages, and always research the manufacturer’s service requirement information first.

3. Taking one garage’s word as gospel: Since 2003 changes in regulations mean that you are no longer obligated to get your vehicle serviced at a franchised garage even when your vehicle is still under warranty. Independent garages can offer competitive pricing and can provide you with sound advice about the maintenance of your vehicle. When it’s time for your service, shop around and speak to a few garages before you commit. It is always worth asking friends and family for reputable garages in your local area.

The need for a good understanding

If you do feel unsure of what is involved in your annual service, or of the types of questions you should be asking garage owners regarding your vehicles service requirements, it begs the question: ‘how can I be sure I won’t be taken advantage of?’

As a generalisation servicing will include engine oil change, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter pollen filter replacements, all fluid levels checked and topped up as required, all wheels removed and brakes cleaned and checked, steering and suspension checked for wear, tyres checked for wear and pressure, exhaust and emissions checked, spark plugs replaced as required, lighting checks and replacements as required”

Having a comprehensive service is advantageous for the long term health of your vehicle, and being aware of what your individual car needs is vital in making sure you pay for nothing more or nothing less than what is necessary.

The benefits of choosing a Independent Garage are expressed from the GiPA UK annual ATO survey for 2015 which express that independent garages are favoured for their good advice to customers, over main dealers and fast-fits. This research supports the thinking that independent garage owners are likely to give advice to their local customer base about the needs of their vehicles, and are a trustworthy option in the market.
